Intermediate SQL Server Database Administrator
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an Intermediate SQL Server Database Administrator for a 12 - month contract in Vancouver or Calgary.
We are seeking an Intermediate SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Enterprise DBA team on a contract basis. This role is focused on supporting and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server databases across multiple environments, ensuring stability, performance, and security.
As an intermediate-level DBA, you will work alongside senior DBAs and other IT professionals, assisting with day-to-day operations, troubleshooting, and proactive maintenance. You will have enough independence to own tasks and incidents, while also having guidance and escalation support from senior team members.
Intermediate SQL Server Database Administrator Specialist Job Details
- Perform daily DBA operations: monitor SQL Server health, review jobs, address alerts.
- Manage backups, restores, and recovery testing to meet RPO/RTO targets.
- Support performance tuning and optimization: indexing, query analysis, statistics updates.
- Implement and maintain security controls: logins, roles, permissions.
- Assist with patching and upgrades of SQL Server instances.
- Participate in incident response: troubleshoot blocking, deadlocks, failed jobs, and space issues.
- Collaborate with application teams on schema changes and deployments.
- Contribute to documentation of run books, standards, and processes.
- Support high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Always On, clustering, log shipping).
- Work with senior DBAs on capacity planning and environment modernization.
Intermediate SQL Server Database Administrator Mandatory Skills
- 3–5 years of experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments.
- Strong knowledge of SQL Server administration (2016 and newer).
- Proficiency with backup/restore strategies and recovery models.
- Hands-on experience with performance troubleshooting using DMVs, execution plans, and indexing.
- Familiarity with HA/DR technologies: Always On Availability Groups, replication, or log shipping.
- Understanding of SQL Server security and compliance best practices.
- Working knowledge of T-SQL scripting for automation and troubleshooting.
- Exposure to monitoring tools (native or third-party such as SentryOne, Redgate, SolarWinds DPA).
- Experience in incident and change management processes (e.g., ServiceNow).
- Commvault: Administer SQL Server backups in Commvault, manage schedules (full/diff/log), perform verified point-in-time restores, and maintain documented runbooks.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
- Experience with cloud-hosted SQL Server (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance).
- Familiarity with PowerShell or automation scripts for DBA tasks.
- Exposure to DevOps practices (source control, CI/CD pipelines for database changes).
