Job Title: Senior SQL Database Administrator (Hybrid 70% On-Prem & 30% Azure)
Location: Rosemont, IL
Compensation: $60-$65 / hour – W2 Candidates only
Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
Overview
We are seeking a Senior SQL Database Administrator to manage and optimize a hybrid environment spanning on-premises SQL Server and Azure SQL platforms. This role supports enterprise applications, reporting systems, and large-scale
clinical/registry datasets.
The ideal candidate is hands-on, technically strong, and comfortable working across administration, performance tuning, modernization initiatives, upgrades, and cross-functional collaboration with development, BI, infrastructure, and
security teams.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Platform Management
- Administer SQL Server environments across DEV, QA, UAT, SUP, and PROD
- Support SQL Server versions 2016–2022, Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, and Analysis Services
- Implement and maintain security controls including backups/restores, TDE encryption, certificates, data masking, and access management
- Monitor system health (CPU, memory, storage) and troubleshoot outages and job failures
Performance Tuning & Optimization
- Diagnose and resolve slow queries, blocking, deadlocks, and timeouts
- Utilize Query Store, Extended Events, sp_BlitzFirst, sp_WhoIsActive, and execution plans
- Optimize indexing strategies, stored procedures, and workload scheduling
- Partner with developers to improve query performance and deployment quality
Deployment & Release Support
- Support after-hours/midnight releases and production change execution
- Execute and validate deployment scripts and DACPAC releases
- Ensure schema consistency across environments
- Reduce technical debt by decommissioning unused databases and optimizing Azure costs
Data Integration, ETL & Reporting
- Maintain and troubleshoot SSIS packages, staging tables, incremental loads, and linked servers
- Support SSRS configurations, data gateways, CRM data sources, and report publishing
- Collaborate with BI teams on data flow stability and reporting performance
Data Governance, Security & Compliance
- Validate PHI/PII masking in non-production environments
- Maintain compliance with internal governance and security policies
- Partner with data management and BI teams to safeguard sensitive data
- Contribute to governance documentation and annual planning initiatives
Upgrades, Patching & Infrastructure
- Apply cumulative updates using documented runbooks
- Lead SQL version upgrades, migrations, refreshes, and consolidations
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams on capacity planning and resource expansion
Troubleshooting & Incident Response
- Investigate outages, recovery issues, blocked jobs, and optimization failures
- Diagnose SQL service, storage, network, and concurrency issues
- Provide root cause analysis and document remediation actions
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Partner with DevOps, BI, Infrastructure, Security, and application teams
- Support users across enterprise platforms and custom applications
- Participate in workshops and present environment health updates
Documentation & Automation
- Maintain inventories of SQL Servers, Azure SQL DBs, ADF factories, VMs, and
metadata
- Develop automation for monitoring, alerts, and ticket creation (Jira/ADO)
- Document deployment steps, upgrades, tuning actions, and change logs
