Sybase Database Administrator (Hybrid)

Location: Lansing, MI
Duration: 12 Months

Work Arrangement

  • Hybrid position: Onsite required from Day 1, two days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
  • No remote-only option.
  • Local candidates strongly preferred.
  • Non-local candidates must be willing to relocate at their own expense and follow the hybrid schedule with no delays.

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Sybase Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team. This is a long-term contract position with the potential for full-time employment in the future, based on performance and mutual interest.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in formal change control environments, possess strong troubleshooting abilities, and be comfortable supporting both Sybase and SQL Server environments.

This role is expected to work 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday) with two onsite days. The position may require participation in an on-call rotation (Saturday morning to Monday morning) after an initial training period. Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required but will always be scheduled and pre-approved.

Environment Overview

  • Primary Environment: Sybase ASE 15.7 on Solaris in an x86 hardware environment within the local network.
  • Secondary Environment: SQL Server (various versions) on mixed Windows Server environments, both on-premises and in Azure.
  • The organization is currently transitioning from Sybase to SQL Server over the next three years.
  • The selected DBA will play a key role in supporting Sybase operations while assisting with the migration effort to SQL Server.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide daily database administration support for Sybase ASE 15.7 environments.
  • Develop and manage CRON jobs and perform Unix command-line operations.
  • Assist senior DBAs with after-hours implementations to reduce overall workload.
  • Perform weekly data fixes and maintenance tasks, primarily on Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Support SQL Server DBAs with Windows Server-based tasks, clusters, and disaster recovery environments (Development, Test, and Production).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database performance and operational issues.
  • Participate in migration efforts from Sybase to SQL Server.
  • Follow change management procedures and ensure compliance with production deployment standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management, providing clear updates on ongoing work and issues.

Top Skills and Experience

  • Sybase to SQL Server Migration Experience – Minimum 4–5 years (Required)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills – Required
  • Unix/Solaris/Linux experience – Required
  • Experience with Sybase ASE 15.7 – Required
  • Experience with Windows Server and SQL Server environments – Required
  • Experience with Disaster Recovery and clustered environments – Desired
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – Required
  • Candidates must be able to speak confidently about the skills listed on their resume.
