Job Title: Senior SQL Server Migration Developer & DBA

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior SQL Server Migration Developer and DBA to help with large-scale database platform modernization and licensing optimization initiatives. This role will focus on converting Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition workloads—including complex Always On Availability Group deployments in multi-node clusters—into Standard Edition–based architectures while ensuring performance, resiliency, and compliance requirements are met.

The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in SQL Server HA/DR design, migration execution, Windows clustering, licensing analysis, and Microsoft certification standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead SQL Server Enterprise → Standard Edition migration programs at scale, including strategy, design, execution, and validation.
  • Assess existing environments consisting of hundreds of Availability Groups and multi-node WSFC clusters.
  • Design Standard Edition–compatible HA/DR solutions leveraging platform-appropriate patterns such as AGs (where supported), clustering, log shipping, replication, or hybrid approaches.
  • Conduct SQL Server licensing reviews to ensure compliance and cost optimization.
  • Develop migration runbooks, implementation plans, and rollback procedures.
  • Oversee deployment and configuration of WSFC clusters, failover policies, and related infrastructure.
  • Conduct performance baseline tests and post-migration performance tuning to ensure equivalent or improved SLAs.
  • Collaborate with enterprise infrastructure, storage, security, and application teams throughout project lifecycle.
  • Document architecture, licensing impacts, configuration decisions, and operational procedures.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and mentoring to internal teams and/or client teams.
  • Deliver projects in accordance with Microsoft certified services requirements and industry best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration and architecture.
  • Proven experience migrating SQL Server Enterprise → Standard environments at enterprise scale.
  • Deep knowledge of SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, log shipping, replication, and clustering technologies.
  • Strong understanding of Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC).
  • Expertise in SQL Server licensing models (core-based, virtualization, Software Assurance, Enterprise vs Standard feature sets).
  • Proficiency in performance tuning, query optimization, and storage/network troubleshooting.
  • Experience building HA/DR architectures and executing complex cutovers.
  • Excellent documentation and stakeholder communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) or equivalent.
  • Legacy MCSE / MCSA in Data Platform or SQL Server a plus.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (RedGate, SentryOne, DPA, SolarWinds, etc.).
  • Experience operating within regulated or compliance-heavy environments.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) for hybrid SQL scenarios.
