TITLE: Automations Engineer
REPORTS TO: Process Engineering Supervisor
JOB PURPOSE: The Automations Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing automation systems to improve the efficiency, quality, and safety of manufacturing processes within the automotive industry. This role involves the integration of advanced control systems, robotics, sensors, and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems to support production goals. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of automation technologies and a passion for driving continuous improvement in a high-paced automotive manufacturing environment.
AUTHORITY: All employees have the authority to stop operations/production for the following three reasons: 1) a quality defect, 2) an unsafe act, or 3) a health hazard.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Design & Development:
· Design and implement automation systems, including robotic cells, conveyor systems, automated assembly lines, and vision systems.
· Develop and program PLC and SCADA systems to control automated equipment and integrate with other production systems.
· Create system layouts, process flow diagrams, and detailed schematics for automation solutions.
· System Integration & Optimization:
· Integrate automation systems with existing manufacturing equipment and software to streamline production workflows.
· Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and calibration to ensure optimal performance.
· Optimize automation systems for speed, quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
· Troubleshooting & Maintenance:
· Provide technical support and resolve issues related to automated systems, robots, conveyors, and other production machinery.
· Conduct root cause analysis to identify equipment failure causes and implement corrective actions.
· Develop and maintain preventative maintenance plans for automation systems.
· Collaboration & Training:
· Work closely with cross-functional teams (production, quality, R&D, IT, etc.) to identify automation opportunities and process improvements.
· Train operators and maintenance staff on the proper use, troubleshooting, and maintenance of automation systems.
· Support other departments by collecting, analyzing, and presenting data necessary for decision-making.
· Project Management:
· Lead and support automation projects from conception to implementation, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budget, and scope.
· Collaborate with external suppliers and contractors for the procurement and installation of automation equipment.
· Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to senior management.
· Compliance & Safety:
· Ensure all automation systems comply with industry regulations, safety standards (such as ISO, OSHA, EPA CE, UL), and safety & environmental requirements.
· Develop safety procedures and protocols for operating automated machinery in a high-risk manufacturing environment.
· Responsible for working with the Engineering and Quality departments to ensure compliance to the change management process; must have working knowledge of product deviation release, technical change process, CTM project.
· Must have working knowledge of the Core Tools used to support the Quality Management system, including but not limited to, problem solving, product launches, and continuous improvement activities.
· Continuous Improvement:
· Evaluate and recommend new automation technologies and equipment to enhance production capabilities.
· Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma practices, to improve production processes and reduce waste.
· Performs all other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
· Strong organizational and time management skills.
· Strong programming skills in ladder logic, structured text, or other PLC programming languages.
· In-depth knowledge of control systems, automation standards, and machinery safety.
· Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
· Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies.
· Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
· Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in automation engineering within an automotive manufacturing environment.
· Hands-on experience with industrial robots, PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), SCADA, HMI, vision systems, and control systems.
· Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for designing automation systems is preferred.
