Taylor Truck Line, headquartered in Northfield, MN, is seeking an experienced IT Specialist ready to take the next step in their career as Director of IT. This hands-on role will lead a small team while managing and enhancing our on-premise systems and server infrastructure. The ideal candidate will bring strong documentation skills, a drive to improve processes, and the vision to move our IT operations forward.
The Director of Information Technology is responsible for the overall strategy, implementation, and maintenance of all technology within the organization. This includes infrastructure, security, transportation-specific systems, and end-user support. The director provides leadership to the small IT team while personally handling a significant portion of daily IT operations, projects, and vendor relationships, including a Managed Service Provider (MSP) that handles NOC & SOC.
Essential duties and responsibilities IT leadership and strategy
- Strategic Planning: Develop and execute a technology roadmap that aligns with the company's business goals, such as improving logistical efficiency, enhancing security, and leveraging technology for growth.
- Budget and Vendor Management: Create and manage the annual IT budget. Oversee the selection and contracts for software, hardware, and external IT service providers.
- Business Alignment: Collaborate with other department heads, including logistics and operations, to identify and address technology needs and optimize business processes.
- Policy Development: Create and enforce IT policies and procedures for the entire company, covering security, data privacy, and acceptable use.
Technical operations
- Infrastructure Management: Direct and participate in the management of the company's hardware and software, including servers, networking equipment (routers, switches, firewalls), computers, and mobile devices.
- Systems Oversight: Oversee transportation-specific applications (e.g., Transportation Management Systems—TMS), logistics software, and enterprise systems like ERP or accounting platforms.
- System Maintenance and Upgrades: Develop and oversee maintenance procedures, ensuring that all systems, software, and equipment are regularly updated and functioning efficiently.
- Monitoring and Performance: Monitor system performance to minimize downtime and quickly resolve issues. Be prepared to provide support during off-hours as needed.
Team management and support
- Supervision: Supervise and guide the two-person IT staff. Delegate tasks, monitor progress, and manage the team's workload effectively.
- Technical Support: Act as the third tier of support, handling escalated issues that the IT staff cannot resolve. Ensure the help desk runs smoothly.
- Training and Development: Provide training and mentoring to the IT staff and the wider company on new systems or security best practices.
- Documentation: Oversee the creation and maintenance of technical and procedural documentation for both the IT team and end-users.
Cybersecurity and compliance
- Security Management: Take overall responsibility for the company's cybersecurity posture, including threat detection, risk management, and the implementation of robust security measures.
- Compliance: Ensure all IT practices and systems comply with federal, state, and industry regulations, which may include data privacy laws relevant to the transportation sector.
- Disaster Recovery: Develop, implement, and regularly test a disaster recovery and business continuity plan to protect critical data and systems
Required qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience: A minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in IT, with some management or supervisory experience. Experience in the transportation or logistics industry is a major plus. Previous experience working with a Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a plus.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of networking, security protocols, operating systems (Windows, etc.), cloud environments (AWS, Azure), and system administration.
- Leadership Skills: Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and leadership abilities. The capacity to inspire and guide a small team while also communicating technical concepts clearly to non-technical staff and senior management.
Certifications: Relevant certifications such as CISSP, PMP, ITIL, or similar are beneficial.
