Job description
Job Summary
InnoVet Health, a small and growing business that provides health IT professional services to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is seeking a Senior Health Data Scientist to serve as a technical team lead on AI/ML initiatives. This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities, not a people management position.
You will lead a small team of data scientists, ensuring technical quality across projects while staying close to the work: designing solutions, reviewing code and methodology, and guiding models from requirements through production deployment. You will also serve as a primary technical point of contact with VA stakeholders, translating clinical and operational needs into actionable analytics.
This role is ideal for someone with depth in health data science who wants to shape how a data science team delivers high-impact work in a complex healthcare environment. The position is full-time and fully remote. The pay, benefits, and growth potential are competitive.
Responsibilities
- Serve as technical lead for a team of data scientists, providing code review, methodology guidance, and mentorship.
- Collaborate with government data scientists and platform teams on technical architecture decisions for AI/ML projects, balancing rigor with practical constraints.
- Establish and maintain standards for model development, validation, and documentation.
- Design and build analytics solutions across a range of health data science applications, which may include clinical NLP (entity recognition, text classification, information extraction), predictive modeling, and analysis of structured healthcare data (EHR, claims, administrative records).
- Apply appropriate statistical methods and validation approaches for healthcare contexts, with attention to bias, fairness, and clinical utility.
- Lead projects from requirements gathering through deployment and iteration, not just model building in isolation.
- Operationalize models in Databricks on AWS and Azure ML, with flexibility to work across a multi-cloud environment. Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, and compliant with healthcare and federal standards.
- Collaborate with data engineers and IT teams on data pipelines, infrastructure, and integration.
- Partner with VA stakeholders to understand clinical and operational problems, scope projects, and prioritize work.
- Communicate findings, methodology, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contribute to proposals, presentations, and documentation for federal clients.
Qualifications
- MS or PhD in data science, biomedical informatics, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on data science experience.
- Proven track record of end-to-end project delivery: taking models from problem definition through production deployment, not just prototyping.
- Production ML experience on cloud platforms (Databricks, Azure ML, or equivalent). Comfort working in a multi-cloud environment.
- Strong programming proficiency in Python, with working knowledge of SQL and Spark.
- Ability to review others' code and methodology, provide constructive feedback, and elevate team quality.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Experience presenting to senior stakeholders or federal clients.
- Must possess a valid Green Card or be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with healthcare data (clinical, claims, EHR, or similar).
- Experience with VA data systems (CDW, VistA, VINCI) or other large-scale federal health data.
- Strong background in clinical NLP, medical imaging analysis, or other specialized health data science domains.
- Prior experience in federal contracting or healthcare consulting.
- Experience with LLMs and generative AI in healthcare applications.
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR) or clinical terminologies (ICD, SNOMED, RxNorm).
