Founding Embedded Systems Engineer

Hayla

Full-time

Detroit, MI

Job description

About Hayla

Hayla is building the intelligent direct current (DC) power layer for next-generation AI infrastructure. As data centers transition to higher-efficiency, high-voltage DC architectures — including emerging 800-volt systems — new hardware and control layers are required to deliver power with precision, safety, and real-time responsiveness. Hayla is developing that platform. We are a pre-seed company backed by leading investors and operators. Joining now means helping define the architecture, engineering culture, and technical foundations of a new category in AI power systems.

The Role

We are seeking an embedded systems engineer to build the firmware and control software that coordinates Hayla’s distributed power hardware. You will develop microcontroller-level control logic, implement real-time sensing and actuation, and build reliable communication pathways between node-level controllers and our central decision layer. This role involves close collaboration with power electronics, controls, and system modeling teams. If you enjoy low-level systems that interact directly with high-power hardware, care about timing and reliability, and want to shape a new class of embedded power-control systems, this is the right role. What You’ll Do

  • Develop firmware for microcontroller-based power control nodes, including sensing, actuation, and communication
  • Implement low-level digital interfaces (GPIO, timers, ADCs, DMA, serial protocols, etc.) for power hardware
  • Build scalable, low-latency communication between distributed controllers and central control software
  • Integrate current, voltage, and temperature sensing into real-time decision loops
  • Conduct iterative bring-up, diagnostics, and testing of firmware on real hardware
  • Collaborate with power electronics engineers to validate control behavior under real electrical load
  • Work with controls/ML engineers to translate high-level routing decisions into embedded actions
  • Contribute to board-level design reviews, component selection, and embedded architecture development
  • Create documentation, testing frameworks, and workflows for reliable embedded development

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience developing embedded firmware for real-time systems
  • Proficiency with microcontroller platforms (ARM, RISC-V, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of low-level peripherals, interrupts, timers, ADCs, and digital communication
  • Hands-on experience debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and hardware tools
  • Familiarity with timing constraints, deterministic behavior, and safety-conscious embedded design
  • Ability to own features from prototype → production-quality firmware
  • Comfortable working in a small, high-ownership environment with fast iteration cycles

Bonus Points

  • Experience with digital control of power electronics or electromechanical systems
  • Exposure to Ethernet, industrial protocols, or embedded networking stacks
  • Familiarity with high-current sensing, protection hardware, or distributed control systems
  • Background in bootloaders, firmware update systems, or board bring-up
  • Prior startup, R&D, or zero-to-one embedded development experience

Why Join Hayla

Build the embedded-control layer behind the future of AI data-center power. Work closely across hardware, controls, and system architecture. See your firmware control real high-voltage hardware in production environments. Earn meaningful early-stage equity and shape a new technological category.
