Job description

Job Title: Senior Database Administrator 

Role Overview 

Responsible for managing all aspects of the Center for Congregations database including front-end user interface design through coding, reporting, troubleshooting, security, internal customer service and optimization. Identifies opportunities to increase efficiency and educates staff on how to use the database. 

Implements data models, database designs, data access, user roles and table maintenance codes. Resolves database performance and capacity issues, and any other data issues.  

Key Responsibilities 

Application Development (Front-End)

  • Maintain and enhance the frontend VB.NET WinForms desktop application that provides staff access to the Center’s proprietary database to ensure a consistent, user-friendly experience.
  • Develop and implement new features and functionality in VisualBasic WinForms based on organizational needs, user feedback, and evolving business processes.
  • Collaborate with staff to gather requirements, design intuitive workflows and user interfaces, and translate those into efficient application code.
  • Write, test, and debug application logic that interacts with the underlying SQL Server database while maintaining data accuracy and performance.
  • Train all staff in the use of our database software application, The InfoCenter. Enforce standards and consistency, as well as ensure ease of use.  

Database Administration (Back-End)

  • Maintain and enhance the Center’s proprietary database to support organizational data needs utilizing SQL Server and other database associated apps and languages. Develop and optimize database queries, stored procedures, and indexes for efficient data access and retrieval 
  • Implement and maintain data security measures, backups, and disaster recovery plans to ensure data integrity and availability. Monitor database performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements as needed 
  • Prepare and support users by conducting training; providing information; resolving problems; establishing appropriate roles for data access  
  • Provide technical support to internal teams, troubleshooting issues and offering solutions to improve system performance and reliability 
  • Increase database functionality by identifying and understanding organizational needs then developing and implementing solutions; advise senior management regarding user requests, database improvements, and implementation of emerging database technologies  
  • Create and maintain user documentation (reflecting standards such as name standardization, character counts, and instructions) and technical documentation (such as DB architecture, development history/progress, and business rules like our congregational, not individual, focus) 
  • Collaborate with internal teams to understand data needs and develop appropriate iterative improvements based on feedback and the Center’s growth in database utilization 
  • Assist staff with complex data extraction, reporting and data importing 
  • Propose revised or new systems and execute the installation, such as the conversion from desktop to web-based programs 
  • Work with outside vendors as necessary to identify and resolve complex issues requiring additional, external assistance 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred 
  • At least three-five years’ experience in database design and management required 

Required Technical Proficiencies

  • Database management systems –MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Enterprise Manager, VisualStudio (VisualBasic WinForms), VisualStudio.NET with Crystal Reports and Microsoft Access 
  • Working knowledge of all layers of the application stack from the OS to front-end, including relational database systems, object-oriented programming (OOP), and web application development 
  • Knowledge of data modeling, normalization, query optimization, and database design 
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Tableau) 
  • Basic knowledge of web/database hosting products, particularly Microsoft Azure 
  • Experience with PowerShell, task scheduler, GitHub and certificate management

Job Type: Full-time

Base Pay: $90,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
