Senior Electrical Controls Engineer

Cutting Edge Automation, Inc.

Full-time

Belcamp, MD

Job description

Cutting Edge Automation, designs, build, and integrate custom industrial automation systems—including assembly & testing equipment, conveyor systems, coding & inspection solutions, and robotic cells. This is a hands-on senior role responsible for owning electrical controls and software from concept through commissioning.

This position is ideal for an experienced controls engineer who enjoys architecting systems, solving integration problems, and seeing machines come to life on the floor—not just programming from redlines.

You will work closely with mechanical engineering, vendors, and customers, and you will play a key role in shaping how controls are standardized as the company grows.

Key Responsibilities

Controls Architecture & Software

  • Design and implement PLC software architectures for custom machines & systems
  • Develop scalable, modular control code
  • Own IO structure, tag naming conventions, alarms, and diagnostics
  • Integrate database communications and production data logging

System Integration

  • Integrate vendor equipment including conveyors, barcode scanners/printers, vision systems, and robotics
  • Program and/or integrate industrial robots (Epson RC+ or Fanuc experience a plus)
  • Configure industrial networks and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, EtherCat, OPC-UA, etc.)

Electrical Design Support

  • Define control panel architecture, hardware selection, and network topology
  • Review electrical schematics and panel designs (panel build may be outsourced)
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (NFPA 79, UL 508A, NEC)

Testing, Startup & Support

  • Support FAT, SAT, and on-site commissioning
  • Troubleshoot complex system issues under real-world production conditions
  • Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Support customers during startups and early production runs

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Produce clear documentation: descriptions of operation, IO lists, network diagrams
  • Work with project management on scope definition and engineering estimates
  • Participate in continuous improvement of internal controls standards and templates

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in industrial electrical controls engineering
  • Strong PLC experience in Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or Omron Sysmac Studio
  • Solid understanding of IEC 61131-3 programming (Structured Text and Ladder)
  • Proven experience owning full machine controls—not just isolated subsystems
  • Experience integrating vendor equipment and third-party automation components
  • AutoCAD Electrical experience
  • Comfortable debugging systems during FAT and startup
  • Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Robot programming or integration (Epson, Fanuc)
  • Barcode, vision, or traceability systems
  • Database or MES integration
  • Background with custom machine builders or system integrators

Work Environment & Travel

  • Work will include time in office, shop floor, and customer facilities
  • Ability to travel domestically for startups and support (~15%)
  • Ability to work in industrial environments (noise, temperature variation)
  • Occasional overtime during critical project phases

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary
  • Annual discretionary performance bonus
  • Health insurance (employer-subsidized)
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Flexible, growth-oriented environment with significant influence on engineering direction

Why This Role Is Different

  • You will own systems, not just tasks
  • You will influence controls standards and architecture as the company scales
  • You will work on custom machines, not mass-produced products
  • You will have direct impact on project success and customer satisfaction

This role is a strong fit for an experienced controls engineer who wants technical responsibility, autonomy, and visibility, without the bureaucracy of a large corporate environment.
