The Senior Network Engineer/Architect plays a critical leadership role in designing, implementing, and supporting the City’s global, mission-critical network infrastructure. This role bridges high-level network architecture with operational excellence, ensuring secure, reliable transport for VoIP, IP Video Surveillance, and other high-availability services. The position temporarily fills the responsibilities of the departing Chief Network Operations Officer.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, plan, and deploy highly available WAN, LAN, and data center networks using Juniper (MX, EX/QFX) and Palo Alto Networks firewalls.
- Develop and maintain the MPLS core network, including L2/L3 VPNs, Traffic Engineering, and Label Distribution Protocols (LDP/RSVP).
- Design and implement BGP routing policies for multi-homed internet connectivity and global route optimization.
- Lead the network aspects of strategic technology projects, aligning with business goals and security standards.
- Configure and optimize QoS for high-volume, real-time services such as VoIP and IP Video Surveillance.
- Conduct capacity planning and traffic analysis for continuous recording IP cameras (H.264/H.265).
- Manage VLAN segmentation, 802.1x authentication, and PoE/PoE+ power for surveillance and endpoint systems.
- Configure and manage Juniper SRX and Palo Alto NGFW features including VPN, NAT, App-ID, and User-ID.
- Provide Tier 3/4 escalation support for complex network and performance incidents.
- Use Wireshark and other monitoring tools for packet analysis and performance troubleshooting.
Required Skills & Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in network engineering; 3+ years as a Lead or Architect.
- Expert in Juniper Junos OS (routers, switches, firewalls).
- Deep expertise in BGP, MPLS (LDP, RSVP-TE, L2/L3 VPNs), and QoS.
- Proven experience with Palo Alto Networks (Panorama, App-ID, Content-ID, WildFire).
- Strong experience with real-time, high-volume networks (VoIP and IPVS).
- Advanced troubleshooting and analytical capabilities using modern diagnostic tools.
