Entry-Level Software Engineer (Contract, PT/FT) — Hybrid (Moorpark, CA)

Compensation: $25–$30/hour (DOE, based on portfolio/projects)

About the role

We’re building modern public safety software and looking for an entry-level engineer who’s hungry to learn, ship, and own real features end-to-end. You’ll work closely with senior engineers to design, build, and operate cloud-hosted systems that real users depend on.

What you’ll do

• Contribute to backend services and APIs (Go, Python) and/or frontend features (React).
• Design schemas and write queries against PostgreSQL; help maintain data quality and performance.
• Work on event-driven components using Kafka.
• Deploy and operate services on DigitalOcean and AWS with CI/CD best practices.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, observability, and reliability improvements.
• Translate domain knowledge from SMEs into well-designed systems and workflows.

You have

• At least one personal, school, or work project to show (GitHub, portfolio, or live demo).
• Foundational CS knowledge (data structures, algorithms, networking basics).
• Exposure to infrastructure design, systems design, API design, and engineering best practices.
• Degree not required; BS in CS or related field (completed or in progress) preferred.
• Willingness to be on-site in Moorpark, CA for the first 1–2 months to ramp up, then work hybrid.
• Clear communication, curiosity, and a bias toward action.

Nice to have (optional)

• Experience with containers, Terraform or similar IaC, and cloud networking basics.
• Familiarity with auth, security best practices, and observability (metrics/logs/traces).
• Any exposure to public safety, real-time systems, or high-reliability environments.

Schedule & work setting

• Contract role with the option of part-time or full-time hours.
• Core collaboration hours during the business day; flexible outside of that.
• Hybrid after on-site ramp (1–2 months in person).

Pay

• $25–$30/hour, commensurate with experience and demonstrated project work.
