Senior Firmware Engineer (Embedded Systems)

RPM Tech

Full-time

Forest Hill, MD

Job description

About EDGE10 Group
We're transforming athlete health and performance management for the world's elite sports organizations. Our ARMS platform processes data from 250,000+ athletes across 40 sports, serving 1,500+ teams including every MLB franchise, NHL teams, Premier League clubs, and the ATP. With 16 league-wide partnerships and offices across five continents, we're the technical backbone powering how professional sports teams make decisions that win championships.

Built by practitioners, for practitioners - our co-founder is an NHL Hall of Famer, and our team includes former athletic trainers from across the Major Leagues including teams like the Lakers and Montreal Canadiens. We think as sports people, not just data people.

The Role
Location: On-site in Dedham, MA - 5 days per week required.
We're seeking a systems-oriented software engineer who gets excited about building robust, distributed backend infrastructure at global scale. You'll work on core data pipelines processing medical records, performance metrics, and testing data from thousands of teams worldwide. You'll help us migrate our legacy C#/.NET systems to modern Python/React/AWS architecture while maintaining zero downtime for clients who depend on us during game day.

This is perfect for someone who appreciates the elegance of Unix philosophy, believes in doing one thing well, and thinks systemd was a mistake.

What You'll Do

  • Design high-performance data pipelines processing real-time athlete health and performance data across multiple time zones and leagues
  • Build distributed systems for secure EMR and analytics serving at global scale
  • Migrate legacy SQL Server systems to cloud-native PostgreSQL/Aurora architectures
  • Optimize our Python-based analytics infrastructure for speed and reliability
  • Write clean, efficient C/C++ for performance-critical data processing components
  • Architect cloud-native solutions on AWS (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, Aurora) and Azure
  • Debug complex distributed system issues using strace, gdb, and deep Unix knowledge
  • Collaborate in-person with our Massachusetts-based engineering team
  • Contribute to our open-source initiatives and internal tooling

You Are

  • Either: Recent college graduate with a CS degree (or equivalent), OR 1-4 years of professional experience, OR demonstrated expertise through substantial open-source contributions
  • Someone who installed Linux in high school and never looked back
  • Fluent in Python and at least one systems language (C, C++, Rust, or Go)
  • Comfortable with AWS/Azure services and infrastructure-as-code (or eager to learn)
  • Experienced with Unix/Linux internals, shell scripting, and system programming
  • A believer in text files, command-line tools, and the power of pipes
  • Allergic to unnecessary complexity and enterprise Java patterns
  • Someone who reads man pages for fun and has opinions about init systems
  • Located in or willing to relocate to the Greater Boston area (Dedham, MA)
  • Able to commit to full-time on-site work Monday-Friday

Technical Must-Haves

  • Deep understanding of Unix/Linux systems (process management, IPC, file systems)
  • Demonstrable experience with Python and at least one compiled language (through work, school projects, or documented open-source contributions)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure)
  • Experience with data processing and system design
  • Git proficiency and collaborative development experience
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and distributed systems
  • Comfort working with sensitive data and security-first architecture

Bonus Points For

  • Significant, documented open-source contributions (especially to systems-level projects)
  • Experience with healthcare/EMR systems or HIPAA compliance
  • .NET/C# experience (we're migrating away, but domain knowledge helps)
  • SQL Server to PostgreSQL migration experience
  • Knowledge of real-time data streaming (Kafka, Redis Streams)
  • Database internals knowledge (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Redis)
  • Experience with time-series data and analytics systems
  • Strong opinions about vim vs emacs (we won't judge which side)
  • Sports background or understanding of athletic performance metrics

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary ($75k - $125k depending on experience) + performance bonus
  • Meaningful equity in a profitable, growing company ($20M annual revenue)
  • Convenient Dedham, MA location with parking
  • Work with literally the best sports organizations on the planet
  • Top-tier development hardware of your choice (yes, including that ThinkPad)
  • Conference and learning budget
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited PTO (and we actually encourage you to use it)
  • Work on systems that help athletes perform at the highest level and stay healthy
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers if you're early in your career

Our Tech Stack
Legacy: C#/.NET, SQL Server, Azure
Modern/Target: Python, PostgreSQL/Aurora, Redis, AWS (Lambda, ECS, S3, RDS), Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions
Also in the mix: React, TypeScript, various sports data APIs and integrations

Not For You If

  • You think Visual Studio is the pinnacle of IDEs
  • You prefer clicking through Azure portals to writing Terraform
  • You believe in "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM/Microsoft"
  • You think microservices are always the answer
  • You prefer meetings to coding
  • You're looking for remote or hybrid work arrangements

How to Apply
Send us:

  • Your GitHub profile or code samples (for recent grads or open-source contributors, this is especially important)
  • A brief note about your favorite Unix tool and why
  • Your resume (plain text preferred, we can handle PDF)

Optional:

Tell us about your favorite sport or team, or a sports memory that stuck with you
No cover letters, no personality assessments, no take-home projects that take a weekend

Why Edge10?
We're not a typical SaaS company. When you ship code, it directly impacts whether an NHL team makes the playoffs, whether an MLB pitcher avoids Tommy John surgery, or whether a Premier League club identifies the next world-class talent. Our clients include some of the most demanding, high-performance organizations on Earth, and we take that responsibility seriously.

We've been profitable and growing steadily for years. No burn rate drama, no pivot anxiety, no "growth at all costs" nonsense. Just sustainable engineering for clients who depend on us.

This is an on-site position in Dedham, MA requiring 5 days per week in the office. We value in-person collaboration and believe the best engineering happens when teams work together face-to-face.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
