As large language models increasingly sit between customers and merchants, traditional assumptions around checkout, payments, identity, and merchant of record begin to break. Satsuma works with merchants, platforms, and partners to define and enforce the business rules that allow merchants to retain customer relationships, loyalty, and differentiation across both link-out and in-chat transaction models, as commerce expands into new AI-native surfaces.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and own backend systems end to end, from architecture through production and iteration
• Make architectural tradeoffs around scalability, fault tolerance, and performance
• Build and operate event-driven and asynchronous systems that reliably process and move data
• Design and maintain data pipelines, including ETL, transformations, and syncing across systems
• Develop and evolve REST APIs and integrations with internal and external systems
• Clearly communicate how systems work to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Partner closely with product and leadership in a fast-moving, early-stage environment

Must Have

• Demonstrated ownership of backend systems end to end, not just individual tickets or components
• Experience designing fault-tolerant, scalable systems in production
• Ability to clearly explain a full system, including architecture, data flow, and failure modes, in plain language
• Strong backend experience with Java and Spring

Strong Experience With

• Event-driven and asynchronous architectures
• Data pipelines, including ETL, transformations, and syncing data across services
• REST APIs and message brokers
• Distributed systems such as search services, carts, platforms, or similar systems

Bonus

• Familiarity with MCP servers
• Understanding of how embedded chatbots on websites are architected and integrated

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year
