Ziebart International Corporation has an opening for a Senior Database & Platform Engineer.

Job Introduction

We are consolidating international and domestic production systems into a single, authoritative distributed platform built on CockroachDB running on AWS.

Role Overview

The Senior Database & Platform Engineer will own the design, consolidation, and migration of PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases into a single unified CockroachDB schema.

This is the focus for the first year.

In addition to the database unification effort, this role will also support:

  • Kubernetes cluster setup and ongoing platform operations
  • Development of internal tooling and platform integrations using NodeJS and JavaScript

This is a hands-on senior role requiring deep distributed database expertise, strong platform engineering skills, and the ability to execute long-running, high-impact infrastructure initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Responsibility (Core Focus)

  • Analyze and deeply understand:
  • International PostgreSQL database schemas
  • Domestic Microsoft SQL Server database schemas
  • Identify and resolve:
  • Schema conflicts and overlaps
  • Data type and constraint mismatches
  • Divergent business rules
  • Regional versus global data requirements
  • Design and implement a single unified CockroachDB schema
  • Lead schema design and review sessions with international IT stakeholders
  • Plan and execute near-zero-downtime database migrations
  • Migrate data from PostgreSQL and SQL Server into CockroachDB
  • Validate migration correctness using:
  • Row counts
  • Checksums
  • Business logic verification
  • Operate, tune, and support CockroachDB in AWS
  • Decommission or transition of legacy databases to read-only after cutover
  • Document architecture decisions, migration strategies, and operational runbooks

Secondary / Supporting Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage Kubernetes clusters in AWS
  • Configure and maintain containerized workloads
  • Support internal platform services and tooling using NodeJS and JavaScript
  • Collaborate with application teams on:
  • Distributed transaction behavior
  • Retry patterns and integration requirements

Database Experience (MUST HAVE — NON-NEGOTIABLE)

CockroachDB (REQUIRED)

  • Hands-on production experience operating CockroachDB
  • Experience managing multi-node CockroachDB clusters
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Raft quorum and replication
  • Distributed transactions
  • SERIALIZABLE isolation and retry behavior
  • Backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery
  • Experience using CockroachDB as a primary system of record

Candidates without production CockroachDB experience should not apply.

Strong understanding of:

· Microsoft SQL Server

· Experience analyzing SQL Server schemas

· Understanding of T-SQL vs PostgreSQL differences

· Experience migrating or replacing SQL Server databases

· Schema Consolidation (CRITICAL)

Proven experience merging multiple independent production schemas into a single authoritative database

Experience resolving conflicts across regions or teams

Additional Technical Requirements (As Requested)

Must Be Proficient and Experienced In:

· NodeJS and JavaScript

· HTML5, CSS3, Tailwind

· PHP

· PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server

· Git

· AWS and/or other cloud infrastructure platforms

· Serverless architectures (compute and database)

· Containerization technologies

· Kubernetes

· Docker / Podman

· UI/UX best practices

· Advantageous (Nice to Have)

Experience with:

· Neon

· Vercel

· Render

· Railway

Web server and networking knowledge:

· Apache

· NGINX

Real-time technologies:

· WebSockets

· WebRTC

Collaboration & Communication

· Comfortable working with international IT teams across time zones

· Able to explain database and schema decisions clearly

· Capable of balancing backend data integrity with frontend and application needs

· Strong documentation and communication skills

What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)

  • Unified CockroachDB schema approved by both domestic and international IT
  • International PostgreSQL and domestic SQL Server data fully migrated
  • Legacy databases retired or placed into read-only mode
  • Kubernetes platform operational and supporting production workloads
  • Clear, documented source of truth for all core data domains

Education

· Bachelor’s Degree, Information Technology or equivalent.

Travel

· 5% of the time

Pay: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
