We are looking to hire a Senior Staff DevOps Engineer who is highly motivated and capable of developing, monitoring, and supporting a cloud-based platform for web-based applications that form St. Jude Cloud. This team member will work on an agile development team alongside application development teams to create the infrastructure needed for applications to run, develop pipelines that check and deploy code, and make monitoring and alerting rules to proactively track the state of the platform.

This position requires being aware of emerging technologies, platforms, frameworks, and methodologies to ensure the St. Jude Cloud platform exceeds industry standards. The successful candidate will be familiar with most, if not all, of our platform tooling and have expertise in one or more areas. Our current toolset includes:

  • Azure Infrastructure utilizing Terraform and Crossplane for Deployments
  • Azure Kubernetes Service for Application Orchestration (PHP, Ruby, and Python)
  • Istio Service Mesh and Cilium
  • Docker and Helm
  • Github and Actions for CI/CD
  • Continuous Monitoring and Alerting using Grafana, Datadog, and/or other tools

Recognized as a world leader in mapping the genetic landscape of pediatric cancers, the St. Jude department of Computational Biology has developed state-of-art computational infrastructure, well-established analytical pipelines, and deep genomic analysis expertise with a track record of high-impact publications in top-tier biomedical journals such as Nature, NEJM, JAMA, Nature Genetics, and Nature Methods.

The department provides a highly interactive environment with collaborative opportunities across basic and clinical departments, access to high performance computing clusters, cloud computing environment, innovative visualization tools, highly automated analytical pipelines and mentorship from faculty scientists with deep experience in data analysis, data management, and delivery of high-quality results for highly competitive projects. This position is located in Memphis, TN, and relocation assistance is available.

This position may be eligible for the possibility of remote work.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information science, business, or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience in computer science, data science, information science, business, or related field.
  • Experience Exception: Master's degree with 6+ years of experience in computer science, data science, information science, business, or related field.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and Helm highly preferred.
  • Experience in Github Actions or another continuous deployment tool highly preferred.
  • Experience with Istio or another service mesh highly preferred.
  • Experience in Terraform or another IaC tool preferred.
  • Experience in Azure or another cloud platform preferred.
  • Experience in Datadog or another continuous monitoring tool preferred.
  • Exposure to FluxCD or another GitOps tool preferred.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $114,400 - $216,320 per year for the role of Senior Staff DevOps Engineer.
