WHO YOU ARE
You're a seasoned DevOps engineer who thrives as the infrastructure backbone for diverse development teams. You've successfully managed complex, multi-technology environments where Java applications, Python microservices, mobile apps, and serverless functions all need to coexist reliably. You understand that being the sole DevOps engineer means you're not just implementing—you're the strategic infrastructure leader who enables an 11-person development team to ship confidently.
This role requires you to be both architect and implementer. You're someone who can design Terraform modules for Java applications in the morning, troubleshoot Kubernetes deployments for Python services at lunch, and optimize Lambda functions for mobile backends in the afternoon. You bring a systematic approach to infrastructure, knowing that consistency and automation are essential when you're the single point of expertise across multiple technology stacks.
REQUIREMENTS
AWS Infrastructure Leadership:
· 7-10 years of DevOps experience with at least 3 years managing production AWS environments independently
· Proven experience as a sole/lead DevOps engineer supporting multiple development teams (8+ developers)
· Deep expertise with the full AWS stack: EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS PostgreSQL, DocumentDB, DynamoDB, ElastiCache Redis, OpenSearch
· Production experience with Terraform for complex, multi-service infrastructure management
· Strong background with CI/CD pipelines using AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, and GitHub Actions
Multi-Technology Stack Management:
· Experience supporting production deployments across Java (Maven/Gradle), Python, and Node.js applications
· Container orchestration expertise with both ECS and Kubernetes for different application types
· Database operations experience across SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DocumentDB, DynamoDB) systems
· Mobile backend experience supporting iOS/Android applications with appropriate scaling strategies
Infrastructure as Code & Automation:
· Advanced Terraform skills - modules, state management, multi-environment deployments
· Linux system administration with automation scripting capabilities
· Monitoring and alerting expertise using CloudWatch for diverse application stacks
· Security integration experience with AWS IAM, Security Groups, and secrets management
Leadership & Communication:
· Track record collaborating directly with C-level executives (CTO) on infrastructure strategy
· Experience working with compliance teams on security and regulatory requirements
· Strong project management skills for infrastructure initiatives across multiple development streams
· Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
WORK-LIFE BALANCE & ON-CALL EXPECTATIONS
On-Call Responsibilities:
· Primary on-call responsibility for production infrastructure with emergency escalation procedures
· Scheduled maintenance windows for deployments and system updates, typically performed during off-hours
· Compensatory time off is scheduled during business hours for any off-hours work performed
· True emergency response is rare—most issues can wait until business hours unless system-critical
Our Philosophy: We believe refreshed engineers make better decisions, write better code, and build more reliable systems. When you work a weekend deployment, you take Monday off. When you handle an after-hours incident, you start late the next day. Your personal time matters, and we structure our operations to respect that.
PREFERRED/BONUS SKILLS (DevSecOps Integration)
· Multi-environment management experience (dev/staging/prod) with proper promotion processes
· Blue/green deployment strategies for zero-downtime releases
· AWS cost optimization experience - you'll own the infrastructure budget
· Service mesh experience for microservices communication (as the platform scales)
· Disaster recovery planning and implementation
· NIST compliance experience for government contracting requirements (NIST 800-53, 800-171)
· Security scanning integration in CI/CD pipelines across multiple languages
· API gateway management for mobile and web applications
