The Senior Controls Engineer is a technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, and execution of advanced control systems for automated equipment. This role leads controls efforts from concept through commissioning, mentors junior engineers, and serves as a key technical authority across multi-disciplinary project teams. The Senior Controls Engineer will develop electrical schematics, PLC programs, and intuitive HMI designs to effectively control automated equipment. The ideal candidate combines deep hands-on expertise with strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Responsibilities and Duties
- o Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex control systems from component selection through full system integration and commissioning.
- Serve as a technical authority for controls engineering, providing guidance, design review, and mentorship to junior and mid-level controls engineers.
- Architect robust, fault-tolerant control solutions with advanced error handling, diagnostics, and recovery strategies.
- Collaborate with applications engineering, sales, project management, mechanical design, and manufacturing teams to define system requirements, assess feasibility, and ensure project success.
- Develop and review detailed electrical schematics and panel layouts in accordance with electrical theory, NEC/OSHA requirements, and industry best practices.
- Establish and enforce PLC programming standards; develop structured, well-documented, maintainable, and reusable PLC code for complex automated systems.
- Design advanced, intuitive HMI interfaces that provide clear machine feedback, diagnostics, and tools for operators, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex electrical, controls, safety, and system-integration issues both internally and at customer sites.
- Contribute to and review machine documentation including bills of materials, electrical drawings, control narratives, and operational manuals.
- Support manufacturing, installation, and commissioning activities, including on-site startup and customer acceptance testing as required.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to controls standards, tools, processes, and system architectures.
- Travel occasionally to customer sites for system commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support.
Qualifications and Requirements
- 7+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, Automation & Controls Engineer or Robotics Engineer, with significant experience delivering complex, custom automated electromechanical systems in project-driven environments.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead controls design for large or technically challenging automation projects.
- Proven experience designing and implementing fault-tolerant systems with comprehensive diagnostics, safety integration, and recovery strategies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC, OSHA, and applicable industrial safety standards.
- Advanced proficiency with Rockwell Automation platforms, including Studio 5000 Logix Designer, View Designer, and FactoryTalk Optix (or equivalent HMI platforms).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks Electrical preferred.
- Experience programming and integrating industrial robots such as FANUC, Kawasaki, ABB, Kuka or Yaskawa strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of industrial networks, motion control, safety PLCs, and system-level architecture.
- Familiarity with SQL databases and data-driven manufacturing systems is a plus.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills with the ability to interface effectively with internal teams and customers.
- Highly detail-oriented, quality-focused, and comfortable making technical decisions in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment.

This is a salaried, exempt position and we are proud to offer a competitive benefits package. The successful candidate will live in the Louisville, KY area and report to the Controls Engineering Team Leader and Director of Engineering. Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
