Senior Mechanical Engineer

About Innoven Energy

Innoven Energy is at the forefront of laser-driven fusion energy. Our KrF excimer laser platform for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is engineered to deliver high-gain, clean energy with repeatability and scalability. Following the completion of a multi-year research and engineering campaign, the company is transitioning to a full system engineering and demonstration phase. We're assembling a world-class team of scientists and engineers to make fusion energy a commercial reality.

Position Overview

This position will work closely with our Optical Architect/Engineer and other multidisciplinary team members to develop robust, precise, and scalable mechanical solutions supporting advanced laser hardware and optical assemblies. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in large-scale mechanical systems, structural analysis, and CAD-based product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, model, and analyze mechanical and opto-mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Execute detailed stress, thermal, and dynamic analysis on large mechanical structures, including pressure vessels, pipe networks, and optical support systems.
  • Design precision mechanisms and fixtures for alignment and mounting of large-scale optics.
  • Interpret and apply structural and mechanical engineering principles in the context of ICF systems, vacuum chambers, and laser systems.
  • Generate fabrication-ready 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Support structural design validation through FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and other simulation tools.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with optical, electrical, and systems engineering teams to integrate mechanical designs into high-energy systems.
  • Oversee prototyping, testing, and iteration of mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Manage documentation of design intent, test results, and design modifications.
  • Coordinate with vendors and fabricators for component sourcing and manufacturing.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design and engineering, preferably in high-tech or R&D environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, including part/assembly modeling, motion studies, and rendering.
  • Experience with stress analysis and structural modeling of large-diameter pipes, vacuum vessels, and welded assemblies.
  • Understanding of structural dynamics, materials science, and heat transfer fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with opto-mechanical engineering principles, including alignment tolerances and vibration isolation.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, ASME Y14.5 standards, and mechanical drawing interpretation.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Self-directed, able to work independently under guidance from senior leadership.
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
  • U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent credential.
  • Experience in the design of high-vacuum systems, pressure-rated vessels, or high-energy physics instrumentation.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB or Python for engineering calculations, data analysis, or design automation.
  • Familiarity with optical engineering, particularly handling and integration of large-aperture optics.
  • Experience with fabrication processes, including machining, welding, and metal finishing.
  • Exposure to fusion energy, laser systems, or large-scale R&D programs (e.g., at DOE national labs).
