Job description
The Network Engineer – Tier II is an advanced technical role responsible for supporting, maintaining, and optimizing network infrastructures across multiple client environments within a large, remote Managed Services Provider (MSP). This role serves as a senior escalation point for complex network issues involving firewalls, routing, switching, wireless networks, and VPN technologies.
Operating across diverse client infrastructures, the Network Engineer independently resolves high-impact incidents, executes advanced service requests, and performs controlled network changes in accordance with MSP standards and ITIL practices. This role collaborates closely with Network Engineer I resources, Tower Leads, Security teams, and Service Delivery leadership to ensure network stability, security, and performance.
The position participates in a structured on-call rotation and is expected to respond to critical network incidents outside standard business hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Troubleshooting & Escalation Support
- Serve as Tier II escalation for complex network incidents across multiple client environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues including:
- Routing loops and asymmetric routing
- Firewall rule conflicts and policy misconfigurations
- VPN tunnel failures (site-to-site and client VPNs)
- Wireless interference, roaming issues, and capacity problems
- Switching failures, STP issues, and port-level errors
- Lead remediation efforts for network outages, latency, and security-related disruptions.
- Participate in root-cause analysis (RCA) and post-incident reviews for major incidents.
- Support client stabilization and recovery initiatives when network issues are contributing factors.
Network Infrastructure Operations
- Administer and support multi-vendor network environments, including:
- Firewalls (Fortinet, Palo Alto, Meraki, SonicWall, etc.)
- Switches (Cisco, Aruba, Meraki, HP, Ubiquiti)
- Wireless platforms and controllers
- Perform network monitoring, capacity analysis, and performance tuning.
- Ensure network configurations align with MSP architecture standards and security baselines.
- Support segmentation, redundancy, and high-availability designs as implemented by Architects.
Service Request Fulfillment (Advanced Requests)
- Execute complex network service requests including:
- Firewall policy changes and firmware upgrades
- VLAN design and implementation
- Switch stack configuration and replacement
- Secure VPN deployments and modifications
- Validate scope, risks, and dependencies prior to execution.
- Coordinate scheduling and execution with Demand / Service Request Coordinators.
- Ensure changes are tested, documented, and transitioned cleanly to operations.
ITIL Governance, Change & Documentation
- Execute network changes following ITIL-aligned Change Management processes.
- Maintain accurate and current:
- Network diagrams
- Configuration baselines
- Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Ensure documentation is audit-ready for regulated client environments.
- Contribute to standardization efforts by identifying repeatable configurations and best practices.
Collaboration, Mentorship & Cross-Team Support
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Network Engineer I resources.
- Assist with skills development, troubleshooting techniques, and escalation readiness.
- Collaborate with:
- Tower Leads – Network Services
- Security & Compliance teams
- Service Delivery Managers and Directors
- Project Engineering and Technical Architects (as needed)
- Act as a technical resource during cross-tower escalations and recovery efforts
On-Call & After-Hours Support
- Participate in a structured on-call rotation for critical network incidents.
- Respond to after-hours alerts for outages, security events, or connectivity failures.
- Ensure proper documentation, handoff, and follow-up after after-hours work.
- Support uptime and availability commitments across the client portfolio
EDUCATION & EXPERTISE
Required
- 5+ years of experience in network engineering or MSP network support.
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Routing and switching concepts
- Firewall administration and security policies
- Wireless networking and troubleshooting
- VPN technologies (IPsec, SSL)
- Experience supporting multiple client environments simultaneously.
- Proven ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues.
- Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
- Experience working in a remote-first MSP environment.
- Exposure to multi-tenant MSP tooling and monitoring platforms.
- Experience supporting regulated or security-sensitive environments (e.g., healthcare, finance).
