Job Title: Computational Designer

Position: Full time, salaried with benefits

Overview:

The Virtual Construction Lab (VCL) is seeking an entry level* Computational Designer to join our office in New York City. VCL is a diverse team that functions as an innovation lab for Schüco, a globally renowned façade system designer headquartered in Germany. The Computational Designer would join an office of around 25 people with backgrounds in design, engineering, programming, and UI/UX. As a cross-disciplinary team, VCL researches and develops tools that aid Schüco and its partners in the design, construction, management, installation, and maintenance of facade projects around the world. The tasks of a VCL designer are varied, spanning the fields of architecture, industrial design, programming, and construction. The ideal candidate will thrive at this intersection, bringing an enthusiastic drive to learn and innovate. Work will vary from project to project, including but not limited to:

• Design, develop, and implement software applications using object-oriented programming (OOP) technologies
• Candidate will join ongoing software development projects, supporting progress of .NET backend services that serve the configuration and analysis of various façade systems.
• Candidate will bring a designer perspective to developer problems, crafting solutions built upon a deep understanding of client and product needs.
• On-the-job training will be provided as needed for use of specialized packages, such as Rhino Common and Rhino Compute.
• Research and development
• Ideation and pursuit of new solutions for industry pain points, particularly in relation to sustainability.
• The ideal candidate will be driven enough to independently pursue new topics of research and flexible enough to juggle multiple simultaneous projects.
• Modeling and asset creation
• Creation of 2d drawings and 3d models as required per project.
• Graphic design and formatting of printed materials.
• Technical Support
• On-the-job training in Schüco’s extensive library of systems and articles will enable the candidate to act as a technical expert for the VCL team, supporting the definition of feature requirements and business logic.
• Troubleshoot and repair issues and bugs
• Candidate will assist in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving business-critical bugs and issues found in VCL’s software applications.

*Depending on experience, we may also consider mid-level candidates for this role.

The position is based in NYC but often collaborates with Schüco’s main offices in Bielefeld, Germany, with occasional travel for training or meetings.

Architectural licensure is not required for the role and AXP hours are not provided through this position. Please do not apply for this position if you are seeking AXP hours.

Requirements:
-B.Arch. from an accredited university

-Aptitude with programming languages such as C# or Python

-Aptitude with Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator

-Relevant design experience, especially within the facade industry

-Exceptional communication skills between teammates and clients

-Strong writing and public speaking skills

-English fluency is required, German proficiency is not required but is highly desirable

-Legal authorization to work in the United States
