Since 1925, the Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts (AIB) has been the auto insurance industry’s service bureau in Massachusetts providing advisory rate and rule services to its member companies.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and energetic Applications Development Manager to join our team. The Applications Development Manager leads the strategic design and development of in-house proprietary business application software systems and systems architecture. The position will manage all associated activities, including ideation, design, implementation, maintenance, and production support in accordance with best practices. This role will partner with Information Systems Department (ISD) staff, and data and business managers to understand their needs and deliver effective, reliable, and robust software application solutions. The nature of this position results in significant exposure to confidential information. Integrity, discretion, and respect for confidential information are absolutely essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain effective and supportive working relationships with the various key user communities within each Bureau. Collaborate with business and technical users to define custom or package-based system solutions for recurrent business needs. Consider users’ specific needs and assesses opportunities for broader-based solutions that may bring future benefits.
  • Design and maintain the architecture of complex data processing and database systems. This includes developing and documenting the overall structure, components, and interactions of a system; assessing available technologies and recommending appropriate solutions; overseeing integration of different system components; and guiding development teams and providing technical expertise throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and execution of multiple proprietary software project plans concurrently. Effectively communicate and control projects’ scope, schedules, priorities, assignments, resource allocation, and open issues to project team and key stakeholders.
  • Proactively partner with business units to ensure technical problems are resolved in a timely manner, application enhancements are completed, and process and technical improvements are identified and implemented to improve overall efficiency and security.
  • Coordinate, train and develop an effective staff, including defining/communicating performance standards and objectives, and conducting performance appraisals.
  • Provide technical guidance to ISD staff members. Provide alternatives, recommendations, and assistance in the design, development, integration, and installation of business information systems.
  • Ensure applications are implemented and maintained with appropriate levels of data security.
  • Develop and implement policies, programs, procedures, and standards for the systems development function. Define appropriate methodologies for testing of system solutions prior to their incorporation into production libraries.
  • Evaluate automated packages and manual alternatives to software development. Identify, recommend and install cost-effective project that meet user requirements and/or improve maintainability and performance of systems.
  • Plan and coordinate formal periodic system reviews including requirements' definition, design walkthroughs, and testing plans, code reviews, as well as, production turnover.
  • Develop and maintain a proficient skill level with contemporary IT products and technologies. Keep up to date with industry developments, including potential uses of artificial intelligence within the department.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Bureau management and other key functional managers within ISD.
  • Prepare status reports for Vice President, Technology & Infrastructure reporting significant developments, problems and time investments.

Educational and/or Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science.
  • 8-10 years of related experience required.
  • Training in database logical and physical structures.
  • Excellent written, oral and organizational skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Microsoft DBA and SharePoint certifications a plus.
  • Ability to Satisfy a Clean Background Check.

Pay: $150,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
