JOB SUMMARY:

The Network System Engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining and supporting SHS’ compute communications network for both internal and external users. This individual must ensure smooth operations of communication networks to provide maximum performance and availability for users including staff, clients, customer and suppliers. Also assists other Network Engineer/Architect with the network design, build out, management, and security.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

1. Assist in managing the budget for all items related to the network. 2. Monitor VPNs, server logs, firewall logs, intrusion detection logs, and network traffic for unusual or suspicious activity. Interpret activity and implement plans for resolution.
3. Maintain and support all Cisco Data and Voice network devices.
4. Assist with management of connection security for local area networks, wide area networks, company Web sites, corporate intranets/extranets/portals, and e-mail communications.
5. Assist with Planning, design, and implementation of all security systems and their corresponding or associated software, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection systems, cryptography systems, biometrics, and anti-virus software.
6. Oversee enforcement of policies and procedures for system security administration and user system access, based on industry-standard best practices.
7. Assist with deployment of additional security products and tools, or enhancements to existing tools, to detect violations of network security measures.
8. Ensure the security of data transferred internally.
9. Ensure that the appropriate patches, hot fixes, and service packs are installed on company-owned or licensed software in a timely manner.
10. Assist with the control/monitoring user logon procedures and password management practices.
11. Assist with the design, performance, and/or overseeing penetration testing of all systems in order to identify system vulnerabilities.
12. Assist with design and implementation of security system and end user activity audits.
13. Propagate security awareness among employees.


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelors degree in the field of computer information systems or related field or at least 3 years’ experience in information technology, with an emphasis in network troubleshooting. 2. Basic knowledge of network and IS security components, including firewalls, cabling and cable management standards, anti-virus software, data encryption, and other industry-standard techniques and practices.
3. Good knowledge of IP, TCP/IP, and other network administration protocols, including their vulnerabilities and solutions.
4. Working knowledge of applicable practices and laws relating to data privacy and protection.
5. Working technical knowledge of current systems software, operating systems, and PC protocols and standards, including Windows Active Directory.
6. Hands-on experience with devices such as switches, servers, and cabling.
7. High level of analytical and problem-solving abilities.
8. Ability to conduct research into security issues and products as required.
9. Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

WORK CONDITIONS:

1. On-call availability
2. Sitting for extended periods of time.
3. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools, computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer components.
4. Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as servers and peripherals
