Network Administrator Position Description

Location: Central, SC

Classification: Regular, full-time, exempt

Reports To: Director of Information Technology

General Description

The Network Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the university's network infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performing connectivity across all campus locations and online environments. This position supports the university’s educational and administrative technology needs through proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and strategic planning for network and security enhancements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Network Infrastructure Management

  • Configure, maintain, and monitor network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
  • Manage and document network configurations, changes, and operational procedures.
  • Plan and execute network upgrades and expansions to support institutional growth and technology innovation.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers to ensure reliable Internet and telecommunications services.
  • Support cabling and hardware installation in new and existing facilities.

Security and Compliance

  • Implement and manage network security controls to protect against unauthorized access, vulnerabilities, and threats.
  • Manage network filtering and access control systems, including content filtering, packet shaping, and wireless access.
  • Conduct routine security audits, vulnerability assessments, and compliance reviews in alignment with institutional policies and applicable regulations (e.g., FERPA, GLBA).
  • Participate in the development, testing, and implementation of disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Research and recommend security best practices for university software, systems, and infrastructure.

Support and Collaboration

  • Provide network-related technical support to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Collaborate with IT staff, database administrators, application developers, and system administrators to ensure seamless integration of network services.
  • Assist the Director of Information Technology in planning and assessing the university’s strategic initiatives for technology and telecommunications.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain current knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices.

Documentation and Leadership

  • Maintain accurate network diagrams, configuration records, and change logs.
  • Support institutional security awareness and training programs.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship within IT regarding security, compliance, and operational best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or a related field required; equivalent work experience and certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience with Active Directory administration in a Windows Server environment.
  • Minimum of three years of experience managing Cisco network equipment.
  • Experience in network and server administration within a higher education environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with integrated database management systems is desirable.

Certifications

  • CompTIA Network+ and A+ certifications required, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Preferred: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate, Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, and firewalls.
  • Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting complex network and connectivity issues.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other standard administrative tools.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality.

  • May require occasional evening and/or weekend work; some overnight travel is required.
  • Requires a high level of visual acuity for computer and network equipment work.
  • Classified as medium physical exertion: frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background screening (and credit check, if applicable).
