Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer / Solution Architect to own and evolve our database infrastructure, with deep expertise in IBM DB2 (AS/400 / iSeries) and Microsoft SQL Server. This role bridges legacy and modern platforms, designing solutions that keep critical business systems running while driving modernization efforts. You will be responsible for ERP migration projects, database architecture, performance tuning, business intelligence reporting, and supporting full-stack application development across the organization.
Core Responsibilities
Database Architecture & Administration
- DB2 / AS400 Integration: Manage and query IBM DB2 databases on AS/400 (iSeries) systems, including QS36F libraries and legacy file structures. Maintain linked server connections between SQL Server and AS400 via OPENQUERY for real-time and batch data access.
- Data Migration & Modernization: Lead ongoing migration of legacy AS400 tables and business logic into SQL Server, including schema design, data type mapping (EBCDIC to Unicode), and incremental sync strategies using MERGE statements.
- High Availability: Configure and troubleshoot SQL Server Always On Availability Groups including automatic seeding, replica synchronization, log backup coordination across primary/secondary replicas, and failover testing.
- Performance Tuning: Identify and resolve blocking chains, optimize query execution plans, manage tempdb contention, and implement caching strategies for high-volume reporting workloads.
Business Intelligence & Reporting
- Power BI Stored Procedures: Develop and optimize complex stored procedures purpose-built for Power BI consumption, including shipment analytics, order detail reporting, customer segmentation, and year-over-year comparisons.
- Caching & Performance: Implement materialized cache table patterns with incremental refresh for expensive reporting queries, reducing Power BI dataset refresh times and offloading analytical workloads from transactional systems.
- Cross-Platform Reporting: Build reporting pipelines that join data across SQL Server and DB2 linked servers, handling date format conversions, character encoding differences, and schema inconsistencies between legacy and modern systems.
Infrastructure & Solution Architecture
- Web Infrastructure: Configure and maintain IIS and Nginx reverse proxy architectures, including WebSocket support for real-time applications, SSL termination, and hybrid proxy topologies.
- Cloud Integration: Manage Azure-based services including Azure Blob Storage for SQL Server backups, Azure Functions for business logic (e.g., shipping calculations), and hybrid cloud connectivity.
- Automation & DevOps: Build SQL Agent jobs for scheduled maintenance, backup automation, and data synchronization. Develop scripts for database health monitoring and alerting.
- Application Support: Support full-stack development teams building on C#/.NET, Vue.js, Angular, and Node.js, providing database design guidance, query optimization, and API data layer architecture.
Required Qualifications
Database Expertise
- 5+ years hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2016+), including T-SQL stored procedure development, query optimization, and instance administration.
- 3+ years working with IBM DB2 on AS/400 (iSeries), including RPG program file structures, QS36F/T60FILES libraries, and EBCDIC data handling.
- Proven experience configuring and troubleshooting SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, including automatic seeding, replica management, and backup preference configuration.
- Strong understanding of MERGE operations, linked server configurations, OPENQUERY patterns, and cross-platform data synchronization.
- Experience with database backup strategies including backup to URL (Azure Blob), log chain management, and point-in-time recovery.
Infrastructure & Systems
- Experience with Windows Server administration, IIS configuration, and reverse proxy architectures (IIS ARR, Nginx, or Caddy).
- Working knowledge of Linux system administration (Ubuntu/CentOS) for supporting hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Familiarity with Azure cloud services, particularly Azure Storage, Azure Functions, and hybrid connectivity.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS, SSL/TLS, WebSocket protocols, and firewall configuration.
Development & Tooling
- Proficiency in C#/.NET for building supporting applications, utilities, and Azure Functions.
- Working knowledge of JavaScript ecosystems (Node.js, Vue.js, or Angular) for full-stack collaboration.
- Experience with Git version control, CI/CD concepts, and development workflow tooling.
- Familiarity with Power BI or similar BI platforms from a data engineering perspective.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PostgreSQL, including cross-database queries using dblink and stored procedure development.
- Knowledge of Entity Framework and ORM-based data access patterns in .NET applications.
- Experience with real-time application architectures using Socket.IO or SignalR.
- Familiarity with enterprise e-commerce or order management systems and associated data models.
- Microsoft certifications in SQL Server or Azure (e.g., DP-300, AZ-104) are a plus.
- Experience with legacy system modernization road mapping and phased migration strategies.
