Job description

Senior Data Engineer – Enterprise Data Platform (Microsoft Fabric)

A leading investment management organization is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to help architect and scale its enterprise data platform built on Microsoft Fabric. This role sits within the technology organization and works closely with analytics, financial systems, and advanced data initiatives across the firm.

This position is ideal for a senior individual contributor who enjoys building foundational data systems, defining architectural standards, and shaping governance practices. The successful candidate will help establish a scalable, secure, and future-ready data ecosystem that supports analytics, reporting, and AI-driven use cases across the business.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect and enhance a Fabric-centered data platform using OneLake as the unified storage layer.

  • Establish design standards for Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines, Spark workloads, and semantic models.

  • Develop governance frameworks covering data quality, lineage, metadata, and access management.

  • Translate business requirements into scalable Fabric-native technical designs.

  • Act as the technical authority overseeing external engineering partners, conducting design reviews and ensuring implementation quality.

  • Promote the use of modern Fabric capabilities over legacy Azure-based design patterns when appropriate.

  • Identify and remediate architectural inefficiencies, technical debt, and tool proliferation.

  • Partner with stakeholders across finance, operations, capital markets, investor communications, and other functional areas to deliver high-impact data products.

  • Guide enterprise Power BI practices, including semantic modeling strategy, Direct Lake implementation, performance optimization, and governance controls.

  • Contribute hands-on where needed, including prototyping, framework development, and critical technical components.

  • Define and execute a roadmap that improves platform scalability, simplifies architecture, and increases data accessibility.

  • Provide technical mentorship and elevate engineering best practices across the data team.

  • Collaborate with cloud and security teams to ensure compliance, resilience, and proper environment configuration.

Required Background

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software engineering.

  • Experience contributing to enterprise-scale data platforms (beyond isolated pipelines).

  • Proven ability to guide and review the work of external or distributed engineering teams.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convert business needs into technical architecture.

  • Experience modernizing Azure-based data environments into Fabric-first solutions.

  • A strong bias toward simplification, long-term maintainability, and architectural clarity.

  • Ability to operate effectively in evolving platform ecosystems and adapt to new feature releases.

Core Technical Expertise

  • Deep experience designing and operating production-grade Microsoft Fabric environments.

  • Hands-on expertise with OneLake, Lakehouse and Warehouse paradigms, Pipelines, and Spark-based data engineering.

  • Strong Power BI knowledge, including semantic model architecture, Direct Lake vs. Import decisions, performance tuning, and governance.

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL within Spark and warehouse contexts.

  • Solid understanding of modern dimensional modeling and analytics-oriented data design.

Additional Experience (Preferred)

  • Working knowledge of legacy Azure data services (e.g., Synapse, Azure Data Factory, ADLS) for migration context.

  • Exposure to other cloud ecosystems is a plus.

  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks and metadata management practices.

  • Experience integrating SaaS platforms and external APIs.

  • Experience working in Agile or iterative delivery models.

  • Alignment with skills typically associated with Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer Associate-level knowledge
