Summary

Applied Optoelectronics Inc. (AOI) is a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced optical and Radio Frequency (RF) products, including components, modules, and equipment. AOI's products are the building blocks for broadband access networks worldwide, where they are used in the internet data center, CATV broadband, telecom, and FTTH markets. AOI supplies both customized and OEM/ODM components and equipment in all four of these markets. In addition to its corporate headquarters, wafer fab, and advanced engineering and production facilities in Sugar Land, TX, AOI has a R&D lab in Atlanta, Georgia, and engineering and manufacturing facilities in Taipei, Taiwan, and Ningbo, China.

The AOI Atlanta Engineering Team is a highly experienced group of engineers in Telecommunications, specifically outdoor CATV products. We are seeking a Senior-Level Cloud Engineer specializing in Cloud Platforms such as GCP and AWS who possesses strong engineering skills, particularly in Kubernetes, Big Query, ETL processes, Looker, and GitLab CI/CD pipelines. You will be responsible for designing, deploying, managing, and optimizing Cloud-based solutions and automation workflows, enabling our organization to efficiently scale infrastructure in a secure and cost-effective manner. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on engineering, infrastructure automation, and continuous improvement in cloud environments.

Job Duties

  • Design and implement scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-effective GCP solutions.

  • Develop and maintain cloud automation scripts, tooling, and microservices using Python.
  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and Helm.
  • Set up, manage, and optimize Kubernetes clusters and containerized applications.
  • Develop and manage robust CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI/CD.
  • Implement, manage, and optimize data pipelines and ETL processes using Big Query.
  • Create insightful visualizations and reports using Looker.
  • Enforce best practices for cloud security, compliance, and operational excellence.
  • Troubleshoot cloud infrastructure and optimize performance, cost, and reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, DevOps, cybersecurity teams, and organizational leadership.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute actively to internal cloud standards and practices.
  • Stay current with emerging cloud technology trends and propose innovations beneficial to the organization.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline and 5+ years of direct experience

  • 3+ years hands-on experience in cloud engineering roles on Google Cloud Platform (GCP)/AWS.
  • Solid expertise in Kubernetes for deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience with BigQuery, ETL processes, and building robust data workflows.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and analytics using Looker.
  • Extensive experience implementing and managing GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong Python programming experience for cloud automation and tooling.
  • Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and Helm.
  • Practical knowledge of cloud security principles, IAM, networking, and resiliency patterns.
  • Experience troubleshooting production environments and implementing effective monitoring and alerting.
  • Preferred: Google Professional Cloud Architect or Google Cloud Data Engineer certification.
  • Preferred: Experience with serverless technologies on GCP (e.g., Cloud Functions, Cloud Run).
  • Preferred: Familiarity with cost management and optimization practices on GCP (FinOps).
  • Preferred: Exposure to event-driven architectures or real-time data processing.

Location

This position will be on-site based in Duluth, Georgia.
