General Description and Classification Standards
The APD System Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and security of the agency’s information technology systems, including hardware, software, and networks. The System Administrator also provides technical support and training to end-users, troubleshoots issues, and coordinates with vendors and other law enforcement agencies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.
- Install, configure, update, and monitor hardware, software, mobile devices and network devices used by the agency, such as servers, workstations, mobile devices, routers, switches, firewalls, printers, scanners, cameras, cell phones, radios, etc.
- Ensure the availability, performance, and security of the agency’s systems, services, and data, in compliance with the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policies and standards.
- Manage user accounts, access rights, and permissions for the agency’s systems, and Internet-based law enforcement systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems, perform backups and restores, and implement preventive and corrective measures.
- Provide technical assistance and training to end-users on the use and functionality of the agency’s systems and applications.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies, software, and equipment to improve the agency’s operations and services.
- Coordinate with vendors and other law enforcement agencies on system integration, data exchange, and information sharing.
- Maintain inventory, documentation, and records of the agency’s IT assets, licenses, contracts, and procedures.
- Participate in IT projects, such as system upgrades, migrations, installations, and testing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.
- Knowledge of and experience with Windows, Microsoft Office applications, basic networking, and web/cloud technologies. Linux and SQL knowledge is preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience with law enforcement systems, and CJIS is a plus.
- Knowledge of and experience with IT security principles, practices, and tools, such as encryption, authentication, firewalls, antivirus, etc.
- Ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain hardware, software, and network devices.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under pressure and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a background clearance and a CJIS security clearance.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment.
