Salary: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST I

Range A: $6,513.00 - $8,729.00

Range B: $7,163.00 - $9,599.00

Range C: $7,864.00 - $10,537.00

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Job Summary

The IT Systems Administrator supports the organization’s IT Infrastructure by monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, and administering on-premise and cloud-based systems and applications such as Azure and AWS. Manages, monitors, and maintains Windows server environment, including active directory, files services, and virtual platforms. Installs, debugs, tests, evaluates, and maintains server operating system updates, patches, backups, and disaster recovery operations. Maintains accurate documentation of server configurations, procedures, and system inventories. Administers Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Entra Identity, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams and related security/compliance features. Manages user accounts, licensing, permissions, and group policies across hybrid or cloud only environments. Configures and maintains M365 security controls such as MFA, Conditional Access, DLP, and identity governance. Monitors system logs, alerts, and audit reports to identify and remediate vulnerabilities. Use ITSM platform to manage customer support and systems administration requests, and to document detailed problem descriptions and resolutions. Supports automation efforts using PowerShell or other scripting tools. Evaluates new technologies and recommend improvements to enhance performance, security, and efficiency. Participates in IT projects and initiatives at the department, agency, or statewide level as a Technical Lead, team member, or departmental representative. Works closely with cross-functional teams to support planning and execution of infrastructure upgrades, cloud migration, and modernization initiatives.

Working Conditions

  • Performance of these duties requires the use of computers, infrastructure hardware, networks, databases, electronic mail (both internal and external), voicemail, and the Internet.
  • May occasionally work evening or weekend hours in response to system outages/recovery, maintenance, or upgrade activities.
  • Occasional statewide travel on short notice may be required to support regional office locations.Travel may require overnight stays, driving, and flying.
  • Performance of the duties indicated for this position occasionally require the ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50lbs.

Telework

  • This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, based on eligibility criteria and program need.
  • Employees residing outside California are not eligible for telework.
  • Regardless of telework eligibility, reporting to the designated headquarters may be required at employee expense.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must meet Minimum Requirements in the Information Technology Specialist I Class Specification.
  • If education is required to meet minimum qualifications, applicants must include a copy of degree and/or unofficial transcripts with their application.
  • Unofficial transcripts may be used to verify qualification for filing; official transcripts must be provided prior to appointment if selected.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience supporting and administrating Windows Servers
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and Identity Access Management
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, group policies, and file services
  • Experience with server virtualization technologies
  • Experience in task automation and scripting
  • Experience with system security and related best practices
  • Experience with change management processes
  • Strong understanding of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework for the standardization and improvement of Information Technology services
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and with sensitivity
