Design/Project Engineer

Insight Global

Full-time

New Lenox, IL

Job description

Job Description:

Insight Global is seeking a Design/Project Engineer responsible for the technical leadership, architectural design, and delivery of complex industrial automation systems. This position applies advanced engineering principles, independent judgment, and significant prior experience to develop, integrate, and validate automation solutions that meet customer, safety, and commercial objectives. This position includes periodic travel to customer sites to perform engineering oversight, system validation, commissioning leadership, and complex technical problem resolution. This position requires approximately 50% travel for customer meetings, system commissioning, and field service as needed.

This is an organization in which our Engineers will see their project through from cradle to grave – the engineer who designs the system will also commission and see all the way through maintenance

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Engineering Authority

  • Serve as the senior technical authority for the design and implementation of industrial automation and control systems.
  • Establish control system architectures, engineering standards, and technical approaches for assigned projects.
  • Apply advanced engineering judgment to evaluate design alternatives, manage technical risk, and resolve complex system constraints.
  • Review, approve, and validate engineering deliverables produced by internal teams and external partners.

Control System Design

  • Lead the design of electrical control systems in compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70, UL 508A).
  • Develop and approve control schematics, wiring designs, panel layouts, and bills of materials.
  • Provide engineering oversight of panel manufacturing activities to ensure designs are implemented as intended.

Automation Software Architecture & Development

  • Architect and develop PLC software solutions using platforms such as Allen-Bradley and Siemens.
  • Define structured programming standards, reusable libraries, and system interfaces to support scalability and long-term maintainability.
  • Lead the configuration and validation of HMI/SCADA systems to support safe and efficient operation.

Drives, Motion, and Control Theory Application

  • Engineer advanced motion control and variable frequency drive (VFD) solutions aligned with system performance requirements.
  • Apply control theory principles to tune, optimize, and validate system behavior.
  • Specify and approve drive, motion, and control components based on application demands and lifecycle considerations.

System Integration, Commissioning & Validation

  • Lead system integration activities, coordinating electrical, mechanical, and process engineering disciplines.
  • Direct on-site commissioning activities with a focus on engineering verification, performance validation, and technical issue resolution—rather than routine installation or production labor.
  • Diagnose complex system issues and implement corrective engineering solutions.
  • Ensure technical documentation and knowledge transfer meet project and customer requirements.

Strategic, Commercial & Project Contribution

  • Act as a senior technical stakeholder in project planning, execution strategy, and risk assessment.
  • Provide engineering input into project pricing, scope definition, and margin management decisions.
  • Identify opportunities for standardization, modularization, and scalable solution development.
  • Monitor technical progress against project objectives and proactively communicate risks, assumptions, and required scope adjustments.

Safety & Professional Practice

  • Ensure engineering designs and field activities comply with applicable safety standards and internal policies.
  • Lead or contribute to Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Pre-Task Planning from an engineering risk perspective.
  • Maintain required professional training and certifications relevant to industrial automation environments.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience: 3-5+ years at a systems integrator with industrial automation, controls engineering, or a related role (will count internship experience)
  • Experience owning the full system design for customers – defining functionals specs, all design, commissioning, etc.
  • Hardware Design Skills:
  • Hardware component selection based on customer requirements, sizing requirements, load requirements to ensure system will operate effectively and safely
  • i.e. breakers, switchgears, compactors, wire gauge, overload protection systems, transformers, etc.
  • Familiar with a variety of brands and models
  • Experience creating BOM (Bill of Materials) for projects
  • Ensure hardware adheres to various electrical standards – minimum NEC Standard familiarity
  • Software Design Skills:
  • PLC programming (Siemens, Rockwell, Allen-Bradley RSLogix/Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, etc.) - from scratch design or at least a very strong knowledge and extensive modifications of existing code
  • VFD/Drive programming and tuning
  • Commissioning/Start-Up experience - independently owning this process

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities – We view all our engineering staff as our own mini entrepreneurs within the business
  • We have a loose management structure, and the expectation is to be assigned a project and see it through to completion and servicing (cradle to grave)
  • We’ve seen people be unsuccessful in the past that come from very structured and large corporations
  • For more junior candidates: More grace/mentorship/guidance for more junior candidates, If they have the right attitude we are all in, we don’t mind investing/guiding them
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and experience traveling – for commissioning and support – 50%

Plusses:

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAD software
  • Knowledge of safety standards (NFPA 79, IEC 60204, ISO 13849, TÜV Certification in Safety of Machinery, SIL/PL assessments).
  • Experience with industrial networks and IIoT solutions.
  • Hands-on panel building and wiring experience.
  • Strong project management and documentation skills.
