SUMMARY
Bank of the James relies on our IT systems and infrastructure to help best serve our customers while becoming the region’s preeminent financial institution. We are seeking an entry level Systems Administrator I who is ready to grow their skills. The ideal candidate will work as a team player who is eager to learn, quick to admit their mistakes, and ready to tackle new challenges, while thinking creatively. In this role, the successful individual will protect our critical information, systems, and assets, apply solutions, implement new software and hardware, provide training, and assist in executing our overall IT strategy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. IT Infrastructure (60%)
a. Perform server and network administration tasks, including user/group administration, security permissions, group policies, print services, research event log warnings and errors, monitoring and troubleshooting network performance, and resource monitoring, ensuring system architecture components work together seamlessly
b. Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers and operating systems software, and network equipment
c. Identify system problems and service-related issues, recommend solutions, and escalate as necessary
d. Maintain internal infrastructure requirements including laptop and desktop computers, servers, routers, switches, firewalls, printers, phones, security updates, support internet, intranet, LANs, WANs, and network segments
e. Execute and deploy new IT systems and projects, including regular software maintenance, equipment upkeep, as directed by the IT Manager
f. Maintain adequate system logs and backups; assist with yearly internal and external IT audits as directed
g. Apply vendor-supplied fixes necessary to repair security vulnerabilities
h. Assist in the evaluation of potential equipment, components, and software
i. Assist in developing plans, schedules, and requirements for the deployment of systems
j. Document and understand the local technical environment
2. Customer Support (40%)
a. Provide tier II onsite and remote helpdesk support for both internal IT and other employees, departments, and teams, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues, handling escalations, and application errors as needed
b. Develop a baseline working knowledge of IT systems and services with strong troubleshooting skills
c. Interact with the helpdesk and other teams to assist in troubleshooting, identify root causes, and provide technical support when needed
d. Serve as a front-line point of contact for tickets surrounding a variety of issues; quickly assess and route tickets to appropriate individuals or teams
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Respond to emergency calls for network and system operations, which may include nights and weekends
b. Research and stay current with best practices
c. Perform other tasks as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
a. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred
b. Internship to 3 years proven IT-related work experience, with an emphasis on system administration preferred
c. IT Certifications desired (e.g., CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft)
d. Experience with or knowledge of programming languages and operating systems; current equipment and technologies, enterprise backup and recovery procedures, system performance-monitoring tools, active directories, virtualization, network protocols, cloud systems
e. Customer service experience a plus; strong people skills required

Pay: $40,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
