Lead Web & AI Engineer | Hybrid in Charlotte, NC | Marketing Agency

This is a HYBRID role based in Charlotte, NC requiring in-office work weekly Tuesday through Thursday. Please note that we are only considering candidates who are currently local to Charlotte.

Overview

Crafted is looking for a hands-on, innovation-minded Lead Web & AI Engineer to elevate our front-end capabilities and lead the integration of AI into our digital delivery. This role bridges deep technical execution with emerging AI-driven workflows to deliver high-performing internal agents along with intelligent web experiences for our clients. This role is anchored in front-end web development while also pioneering how we integrate advanced technologies like GPTs, Claude, and intelligent coding agents into our platforms and processes. This leader will collaborate closely with UX/design, content, and demand generation teams to build compelling digital experiences, drive innovation through AI, and create seamless connections to our clients’ MarTech ecosystems.

You will play a hands-on role coding, architecting solutions, and managing the front-end development pipeline while also developing and managing AI agents that accelerate development, streamline automation, and extend human creativity across our multi-disciplinary team.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide a team of front-end developers including overseeing AI-based coding assistants and guiding their integration into the development workflow.
  • Develop and implement standards for front-end development, web accessibility, performance, and clean code practices using our coding frameworks.
  • Prototype and integrate LLM-based technologies including OpenAI GPTs and Anthropic Claude—to build intelligent tools, assistive agents, and automated workflows for development and content generation.
  • Translate UX/UI concepts into responsive and intuitive user experiences in collaboration with designers, content strategists, DevOps, and systems teams.
  • Collaborate with project managers and strategy leads to define milestones, sprints, and roadmaps for both traditional and AI-enhanced initiatives.
  • Work with AI agents to direct coding tasks, integrate custom assistants into workflows, and optimize their output for production.
  • Maintain, update, and document both technical and non-technical development standards, agent behaviors, and project-specific conventions.
  • Integrate client websites with marketing and sales platforms (HubSpot, Pardot, Marketo, Salesforce, etc.) to enhance conversion paths, automation, and data intelligence.
  • Stay current on the evolution of front-end and AI/agent technologies, assessing and experimenting with their impact on our tools, teams, and clients.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, participate in internal strategy discussions, and champion quality across all deliverables.

Your Required Education and Professional Experience

  • 1 – 3 years of proven success as a web developer in an agency or consultancy for middle market or enterprise website development teams.
  • Experience with waterfall and agile software development methodologies and productivity tools.
  • Experience taking ideas and ambiguous data, defining the right outcome, and then mapping the right roadmap to get there.
  • Familiarity with LLM-based development (Claude, OpenAI, etc.) and enthusiasm for building or working with GPTs and AI agents.
  • Understanding of web APIs, headless CMS integrations, and marketing automation platforms.
  • Ability to guide and improve development workflows in collaborative, cross-functional environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across leadership levels, as well as both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills.
